The Grace of Enough - Enough To Share

Our journey this week has led us to some surprising destinations.

We've discovered enough for today.
We've remembered that we are enough because we are loved.
We've learned that contentment is richer than accumulation.
We've trusted that God's grace is sufficient.

Now comes one final lesson.

Enough is never meant to stop with us.

In John's Gospel, a crowd of thousands gathers around Jesus with nothing to eat. The disciples immediately focus on what they lack. There isn't enough money. There isn't enough food. There isn't enough time.

Then a child quietly offers five loaves and two fish.

By every human calculation, it isn't enough.

But in the hands of Jesus, it becomes more than enough.

After everyone was fed that day, twelve baskets of leftovers remained (John 6:1-14).

The miracle began the moment someone stopped focusing on scarcity and trusted God with what little they had.  

I've heard this story explained from an interesting perspective.  The miracle could have been that Jesus multiplied the small gifts from a boy who shared his lunch, astounding all who gathered.  

Or it could have been that by sharing what little he had, the rest of the crowd was inspired to come clean about what they actually had with them, what they had been hoarding, perhaps.  And when they began sharing, they discovered there was more than enough. 

The question was asked at the end of this possible interpretation: "What would be the greater miracle?"

We often tell ourselves we'll become more generous when we have more time, more money, more security, or more confidence. Yet generosity rarely begins with abundance.

It begins with trust, and the ability to surrender what we have to God.  

Paul reminds us, "God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Notice God's purpose.

Enough is given so that it may become a blessing to someone else.

As this week comes to a close, consider what God has already placed in your hands.

Perhaps it is encouragement.

Perhaps it is wisdom gained through hardship.

Perhaps it is hospitality, compassion, generosity, or simply your presence.

It could also be your money, posessions or food that can be shared.  

It may not seem like much. But neither did five loaves and two fish.

Place your "enough" into the hands of Christ.

You may be surprised by what grace can multiply.

May we all learn what it means to live generously. And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all, now and forever. Amen.  

Prayer

Generous God, thank you for every good gift you have entrusted to me. Keep me from living with a spirit of scarcity, and help me to recognize that what I have is enough to make a difference when placed in your hands. Teach me to live with open hands, open hearts, and open eyes so that I may become a blessing to those around me. May my life reflect the abundance of your grace. Amen.
