Living Life Fully Every Day

On one of my recent road trips, I heard an old country song by the group Alabama that found its way onto a playlist I was listening to.

The song is entitled "I'm In A Hurry," and the chorus goes like this:

I'm in a hurry to get things done
Oh, I rush and rush until life's no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I'm in a hurry and don't know why...

It's one of those songs that repeats the chorus enough that it gets into your head, so for days I walked around humming it, and even singing it aloud when I was alone.  Then, as I was rushing around the other day trying to get a bunch of stuff done, and feeling overwhelmed by it all, the song suddenly started to make sense to me.

All I was doing was worrying about doing, and not spending a moment on thinking about being.

Life has a way of slipping through our fingers while we are busy planning for tomorrow, worrying about yesterday, or rushing through the ordinary moments that quietly shape us.

Perhaps that is why Ernest Hemingway wrote in The Sun Also Rises, “You can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another.” Beneath those words is a profound truth: living life to the fullest is not about escaping our circumstances or chasing some perfect future. It is about learning to be fully present where we are, with who we are, and with the God who walks beside us through it all.

Jesus once said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Abundant life is not measured by wealth, status, or endless activity. It is found in the ability to recognize grace in ordinary moments: a conversation that heals, a sunrise after grief, laughter shared around a table, or even the hard seasons that deepen our compassion and resilience.

The Apostle Paul echoes this spirit when he writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Notice he does not say for all circumstances, but in them. Gratitude is not denial of pain; it is the courageous decision to believe that God can still bring meaning, growth, and beauty from every chapter of life. Even our struggles can become sacred teachers when we allow God to meet us there.

Too often, we postpone joy while waiting for life to become easier or clearer. But the fullness of life is happening now—in the imperfect, unfinished, sometimes difficult moments before us. The invitation of faith is to slow down long enough to notice it.

So cherish the people you love. Pause to acknowledge the beauty around you. Let even the hard days remind you how precious life truly is. Each day is a gift, and each moment carries the possibility of grace.

Prayer:
God of abundant life, teach me to live with open eyes and a grateful heart. Help me to notice Your presence in both joy and struggle. Keep me from rushing past the sacred moments of my life. Fill me with gratitude, courage, and hope for each new day. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What moments in your life have you rushed through without fully appreciating them?

  2. How can gratitude help you experience life more fully, even during difficult seasons?

  3. What would it look like for you to embrace today as a sacred gift from God?
