Eternity Written on The Heart

Today I am driving to Arkansas to celebrate my middle son Jackson's college graduation, which is tomorrow.  It seems as though it was only a short time ago that we were settling him in for his first semester.

A lot has happened in the past four years, and as I look back now, it all seems like a blur.  He was still a teenager when he began, and now he's a young man.  These next couple of months will be the last he spends "at home," and then he'll be on his own.

And so it goes, the passage of time.  It sneaks up on us, surprising us with what we already know in the core of our being: how brief yet beautiful life can be.

Author Lawrence Sanders summed it all up when he wrote, “It has all gone so fast... Like a dream. How is it the days crawl by and yet the years fly?”

Those words carry a truth that almost everyone feels sooner or later. In the middle of ordinary life, time can seem unbearably slow—appointments, responsibilities, sleepless nights, long workdays.

Yet somehow, when we pause to look behind us, entire seasons of life have slipped quietly past. Childhood becomes memory. Milestones come and go. Faces change. We wake up wondering where the years went.

Scripture speaks honestly about the brevity of life. The psalmist prays, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a wise heart” (Psalm 90:12). Wisdom is not found in fearing time’s passage, but in learning to treasure it. Every sunrise, every shared meal, every laugh with someone we love is sacred because it is fleeting. The brevity of life does not diminish its value—it magnifies it.

And yet, for people of faith, time is not the whole story. We live within the mystery of eternity. Ecclesiastes says that God “has set eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Deep within us is the longing for something that outlasts clocks and calendars. In Christ, we trust that love is stronger than death and that eternal life is not only a future promise but a present reality unfolding even now (John 17:3).

So embrace the beauty of your life. Celebrate small joys. Hold your loved ones close. Laugh freely. Serve generously. Let gratitude shape your days instead of regret or fear. And as the years continue to fly, may joy, hope, and trust in God guide you into the mystery of eternal life—both now and forever.

Prayer:
God of time and eternity, teach us to treasure the gift of each day. Help us to live with grateful hearts, joyful spirits, and hopeful faith, trusting that our lives rest securely in You. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What moments in your life have reminded you how precious time truly is?

  2. How can you practice greater gratitude for the ordinary joys of daily life?

  3. What does living with an awareness of eternity mean to you today?
