Giving To Your Faith Community
It takes a lot to keep a church thriving and vibrant. For sure, it takes a dedicated and passionate staff and engaged and devoted leadership, but more importantly, it takes members who show their love for their faith community by being involved.
I've often preached and taught that church isn't a place we go to, it's who we are. Those of us who choose to stumble after Jesus are the church to the world around us whereever we happen to be.
To that end, I also need to add that the church is not simply a place we attend; it is a community of faith we help sustain.
Our church is a living body made up of people who gather not only to worship, but to support, encourage, and grow alongside one another. Serving within our faith community is an essential expression of generosity. It reflects the understanding that we belong to one another and that each person has something meaningful to offer.
Paul describes the church as a body with many parts, each contributing something essential (1 Corinthians 12:12–27). Just as a body depends on every part to function well, the church depends on the participation of its members. No role is insignificant. Whether visible or behind the scenes, every act of service strengthens the whole.
When one part is missing, the body feels it. When each part contributes, the body thrives.
Serving in the church can take many forms: teaching, welcoming, organizing, supporting, listening, praying, giving financially, and encouraging. Some roles are public, while others are quiet and unseen. Yet all of them matter. Each act of service reflects a willingness to invest in the spiritual life of others and to participate in something larger than ourselves.
Lent invites us to examine how we engage with our faith community. Do we approach church primarily as consumers, expecting to receive without giving? Or do we see ourselves as contributors, called to participate in the body's shared life?
This question is not meant to produce guilt, but awareness. Generosity within the church grows when we recognize that our presence and participation matter.
Serving also deepens our sense of belonging. When we contribute our time and gifts, we move from being observers to active participants. Relationships grow stronger. Faith becomes shared rather than solitary. We begin to experience the church not just as a place we go, but as a community we help shape.
This kind of service does not require perfection or expertise. It requires willingness. God uses ordinary people, offering what they have, to build something extraordinary. When we serve, we discover that our gifts—however small they may seem—are part of God’s ongoing work in the world.
In this season of Lent, consider how you might serve more intentionally within your faith community. Where are your gifts needed? Where might your presence make a difference? When we serve together, we grow together, and the church becomes a living expression of grace.
Prayer
God of community, help us serve with joy. Use our gifts to strengthen your church. Amen.
