A Church To Believe In

As we take the final steps of the season of Lent, we are reminded of the profound importance of community in our faith journey. Lent is not merely a solitary endeavor; it is a season meant to be shared with others walking alongside us in their own spiritual growth. As Brian Zahnd beautifully states:

“At its best there’s nothing like the church... a place where the poor are fed and clothed, the sick are helped and healed, a place where the immigrant is welcomed, and the prisoner is given dignity. A place where everyone is saint and sinner... A place where we not only carry each other’s burdens, but when necessary carry each other, because, despite our vast differences in education and opportunity, opinions and politics, we are learning to love one another like Jesus loves us—unconditionally. This is the church I believe in."

This perspective invites us to reconsider our understanding of church, not as a place we attend, but as a vibrant community where we can grow, learn, and serve together.

In a world that often promotes individualism, the church is a countercultural entity, reminding us that we are not meant to journey through life alone.

Throughout scripture, we see the early church exemplifying the beauty of community. Acts 2:44-47 describes how believers were together and had everything in common, supporting one another in their needs and rejoicing in their shared faith.

In these communal settings, we experience the fullness of God's love and grace and learn to love and serve one another as Christ does.

The significance of having a community of faith during Lent is particularly poignant.

This season invites us to self-examination and repentance, and having fellow disciples by our side helps us to navigate these spiritual practices meaningfully. Together, we can be vulnerable in our struggles, share our burdens, and celebrate our victories, all while encouraging one another to keep our focus on Jesus.

Our shared experiences deepen our understanding of what it means to embody the Church in the world, supporting one another in living out the gospel’s call to love and serve others.

For those who may find themselves without a church community to call home, I encourage you to seek one out.

Finding a community that resonates with your journey can provide a safe haven for spiritual growth and help foster meaningful relationships built on faith. Look for a place to connect, learn, and grow with others seeking to follow Jesus.

For those who already have a church community, I urge you to cherish and nurture those relationships. Value your connections with fellow believers, and participate actively in your community's life. Invest in each other, engage in service and worship, and support one another in your individual faith journeys.

As we journey through this season of Lent, let us embrace the invaluable gift of community, knowing that together we can draw nearer to Christ and learn to be His hands and feet in the world.

Let us cultivate a spirit of belonging, supporting one another as we navigate life’s challenges and joys, reflecting the love of the Church in every season.

And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us always and forever. Amen.
