Did You Know That God Is Singing Love Over You?

Today our lectionary passage comes from Psalm 32:7 which reads:

You are my hiding place;
    you will protect me from trouble
    and surround me with songs of deliverance. - Psalm 32:7

I  love this verse so much.  It makes me think about a frightened child hiding in the folds of her mother's robe while her mother sings over her to soothe her.

I  also love how this image of God is so comforting and life-giving.  It stands in such contrast to so many of unhelpful images of God that we lift out of the Bible.

And further, it serves to help us connect more deeply with the truth about God's love for us, which is simply this:

God's love surrounds us, covers us, holds our fears and doubts without judgement, and fills us with newness of life--even when we feel like we've been left for dead.

Far too many of us struggle to internalize this, and it shows up in all kinds of ways.  Our self-doubt manifests itself in self-destruction, more often than not.  We become our own worst enemy.

Musician Andrew Peterson recently wrote:
I'm no longer surprised by my capacity for self-doubt, but I've learned that the only way to victory is to lose myself, to surrender to sacredness--which is safer than insecurity.  I  have to accept the fact that I am loved by God. That's it.
If you have struggled to see God's loving cover over you... I urge you to adopt this verse for a while.  Memorize it, say it throughout the day to remind yourself of how you are hidden in God, and that God is singing love and deliverance over you.

And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now and always. Amen.
