The Holiness of Small Acts
I've said this before in one of the Devos, but being a pastor gives you a front row seat to some amazing acts of faithfulness, love, and compassion by church members who often labor behind the scenes.
It's one of the most humbling and rewarding parts of my role to see just how many people eschew the spotlight and quietly and faithfully serve others. On the occasions when their work is highlighted, I often see them glad to be recognized, but also more glad to simply be of service.
Their example emboldens me to find quiet ways to serve every chance I get, and every place I find myself. Every single opportunity that arises around me is a choice between stepping forward and hanging back. When I think of these folks who faithfully give of themselves and their time, it makes me want to step forward.
Mother Teresa once wrote:
“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
We live in a world obsessed with visibility. We are taught to measure worth by influence, recognition, achievement, and success. It can leave us feeling as though our quiet acts of kindness barely matter at all.
But the kingdom of God rarely moves according to the world’s standards.
Jesus spoke often about small things: mustard seeds, tiny coins, cups of cold water, loaves of bread shared among crowds. Again and again, he pointed people toward the sacred significance of ordinary acts done with love. In Matthew 25, Jesus even suggests that feeding the hungry, visiting the lonely, clothing the vulnerable, and caring for the suffering are ways of serving Christ himself.
Most days, faithfulness does not look dramatic. It looks like showing patience when you are tired. It looks like listening carefully to someone who needs to be heard. It looks like preparing meals, sending encouraging messages, checking on a grieving friend, or simply being present for another person when life feels heavy.
Mother Teresa understood that holiness is not found primarily in grand gestures. It is found in ordinary acts infused with compassion.
The truth is that small acts of love often ripple farther than we realize. A gentle word may keep someone going. A moment of kindness may become a lifeline for a weary soul. Even when we cannot see the outcome, God can still use our ordinary faithfulness to bring healing and hope into the world.
The sacred ordinary reminds us that we do not need to change the whole world overnight. We simply need to love the people placed in front of us today.
And perhaps that is how God changes the world after all.
Prayer
Loving God, help me not to underestimate the power of small acts of kindness and compassion. Teach me to love faithfully in ordinary ways, trusting that even simple gestures can become sacred in your hands. Amen.
