Discovering Strength & Hope In Despair
I've been reflecting a great deal this week on the fragility of life and the impermanence of things. It's just something I do from time to time, especially when I've been having more than a few conversations with people who are dealing with grief and loss.
Those conversations inevitably lead me to an examination of my own life and circumstances, and the many losses I've endured, combined with the uncertainty about the future, and a host of other things that bring emotions to the surface I'd rather not have to deal with.
Maybe that resonates with you. Perhaps there are some readers today who are experiencing what I'm describing and feeling the same way.
In the trying moments of our lives, when despair seems to overshadow hope, it can be difficult to understand why we are burdened with such heavy sorrows.
We feel small, fragile, almost invisible, as if our capacity to endure is limited. Which is why the following words of the 13th-century poet Rumi speak to me profoundly, and offer a timeless truth that can inspire us when we are low:
“My heart is so small
it's almost invisible.
How can You place
such big sorrows in it?
'Look,' He answered,
'your eyes are even smaller,
yet they behold the world.’”
This hauntingly beautiful reflection invites us to consider the incredible capacity of the human heart and spirit. Our hearts may feel small in the face of suffering, but God, who is limitless in God's love and power, places within us an ability to perceive and endure far beyond our understanding.
Our sorrows, though heavy, are not too vast for God to handle. Instead, God has endowed us with resilience—an inner strength that allows us to navigate through darkness with grace and hope.
It’s natural to wrestle with questions—why does God allow hardships? Why must we go through pain that feels beyond our capacity? These are profound struggles, yet we have reminders that even in our trials, God is faithfully working within us.
Philippians 4:13, the Apostle Paul reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse emphasizes that our strength does not come solely from ourselves but from Christ’s divine empowerment, which resides within us.
Think of the resilience of a seed buried underground. It seems hidden, fragile even, but underneath, it’s preparing for new life. Similarly, our difficulties serve a purpose—they cultivate patience, deepen our faith, and strengthen our character.
In one of life's great mysteries, we find that God’s love doesn’t exclude pain; instead, it sustains us through it, transforming hardship into a vessel for growth.
Today, I encourage you to look beyond your perceived limitations. You have far more capacity to endure and to hope than you realize. The Creator of the universe has invested in your spirit the inner fortitude needed to face your circumstances with courage and trust.
Even when you feel invisible or insignificant, you are seen and upheld by the One who placed the stars in the sky and knows your heart intimately.
Remember, you are not alone in your struggles. God walks with you, providing strength, comfort, and hope. As you face whatever challenges come your way, hold tightly to the truth that God's grace is sufficient.
With God's help, your small heart can hold great sorrow, but it can also rise in hope, shining His light through your resilience. Rest assured, God has given you all you need to move forward bravely, patiently, and full of hope.
May it be so, and may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all, now and forever. Amen.
